Lovable Bad Design was my first shot at collecting together and shining the spotlight on those modest everyday items in which the true essence of design resides. I self-published a limited edition book (50 copies) featuring photographs and descriptions of a selection of 100 inconsequential items. Lovable Bad Design is an endeavor to uncover the true essence of design. I decided to give those small little items that truly demonstrate the essence of design the humorous name of "lovable bad design." Although they are industrial products that everyone has seen, they are those trivial, inconsequential items that one only notices with a passing glance in their daily life. Looking at them from a design standpoint, despite being truly modern in design in terms of function and shape, they quietly finish their life fulfilling the purpose for which they were created without attracting any attention. In my work as an industrial designer, I feel more of an affectionate attachment to this kind of trivial item than those that are considered to be "good design." I hope that you enjoy the descriptions of these modest lovable bad designs by the great writer Nobuyuki Imai.
